What the app does
WEL Check AU is an iPhone app for looking up Australia's airborne-contaminant exposure values. It shows the workplace exposure standards (WES), which apply until 30 November 2026, next to the workplace exposure limits (WEL), which replace them from 1 December 2026, subject to adoption in each state and territory.
- Look up a substance by name, synonym or CAS number. See TWA, STEL and peak values in ppm and mg/m³, notations (Sk, DSEN, RSEN, OTO), carcinogen categories and whether the value is stricter, less strict, the same, new, or removed under the WEL.
- Scan a safety data sheet or product label with the camera, a photo or pasted text. The text is read on your iPhone and the app lists the CAS numbers and names it found. Readings it had to correct are marked "Check". Nothing is ticked for you: you confirm each match against the sheet.
- Site registers (with the unlock): keep a list of substances for each site and export it to CSV or an A4 PDF.
The app works offline and needs no account.
Reference only
WEL Check AU is a reference tool. It does not measure anything and it does not tell you whether a workplace complies. Air monitoring, a competent person's assessment and your state or territory WHS regulator decide that. If a value in the app ever differs from the published Safe Work Australia list, the published list is right. Please email us so we can fix the app.
Where the data comes from
The values come from Safe Work Australia's public documents:
- Workplace exposure standards for airborne contaminants (amended November 2025)
- Workplace exposure limits for airborne contaminants (amended November 2025)
- Changes to Workplace Exposure Limits, June 2025 (the WES-to-WEL comparison)
© Commonwealth of Australia. Used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). Changes made: values extracted by script from the published tables and checked against the PDF editions and the comparison document; WES and WEL entries joined; the direction of change and some common search names added. Safe Work Australia does not endorse this app and is not affiliated with it.
Free and paid
- Searching and the full list of names are free.
- Full detail for any three substances is free and stays open.
- A one-off A$14.99 in-app purchase unlocks every substance and site registers with CSV and PDF export. No subscription.
Payment is handled by Apple. The unlock belongs to your Apple Account: on a new iPhone, or after reinstalling, open the Sources tab and tap Restore purchase. If the purchase says it is waiting for approval (Ask to Buy, or a payment check), the unlock appears once Apple approves it.
Refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. This does not limit your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
The scanner missed a substance or misread a CAS number. Photos read most reliably when flat, in good light, with section 3 (composition) or section 8 (exposure controls) filling the frame. You can also search for the substance by hand. If a clear sheet keeps scanning wrongly, email us the text (not the photo) and the product name.
A substance isn't in the app. The app only lists substances that appear in Safe Work Australia's WES or WEL lists. A valid CAS number that isn't in either list (water, for example) is shown as "not in the lists".
Which value applies to me? That depends on when and where. Check whether your state or territory has adopted the WEL and from when.
